The RMS Titanic is possibly the world's most famous ship, known for her tragic sinking on her maiden voyage.

The Titanic was built in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast for the White Star Line company. The Titanic took over 2 years to build and she was launched in May 1911.  Weighing over 46,000 tonnes the hull was held together with over three million iron and steel rivets, which by themselves weighed over 1,200 ton. The ship was an Olympic-class Ocean liner with 10 decks. Standing above the decks were four funnels, only three were functional—the aftmost one was a dummy, installed for aesthetic purposes and kitchen ventilation.

Said to be unsinkable, the Titanic left Cobh, Ireland for the final leg of her route, between Southampton and New York via Cherbourg and Queenstown (Cobh) in what was to be her first and final journey. At 11.40 pm on April 14, 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. In a mere 2 hours and 40 minutes the ship sank to the bottom of the Atlantic with the loss of more than 1500 lives making it one of the deadliest sinkings in maritime history, then and now.
