The Soleil Royal, named in honour of Louis XIV, the Sun King, was one of the most powerful warships of her time. The Soleil Royal was launched in 1669 in Brest, having taken only two years to build. This ship of the line carried 104 cannons, and as flagship of the French Navy, was extensively decorated with wooden carvings.

Although she had a hasty build time, she was not commissioned for another 20 years, when in 1688 the Nine Years War broke out. The Soleil Royal led a French fleet of 70 ships to a victory against a united British and Dutch flotilla, of 57 ships, at the Battle of Beachy Head in July 1690. Two years later the situation was very different when the Soleil Royal was on the losing side. At the battle of Barfleur on 20 May 1692, a French fleet with only 44 ships fought a British and Dutch flotilla with twice as many ships. After disengaging from battle some French ships escaped but the Soleil Royal was heavily damaged. She was beached at Cherbourg to attempt repairs. On 23 May 1692 the British managed to burn her on the beach by fireship, where she still lies to this day.

The Soleil Royal (Royal Sun) was a French gunship which was completed in 1670, taking a mere two years to complete. Although she had a hasty build time, she was not commissioned for another 20 years until 1688 when the Nine Years War broke out. Given her size and gun capacity of 104 it is quite surprising that she only lasted 3 battles and was sunk during The Battle of Cherbourg in 1692, where she still lies to this day.
