RMS Lusitania was an ocean liner built in 1906 for the British company Cunard Line. She sailed from Liverpool to New York via Cherbourg, France and Cork, Ireland.

When she was launched in 1907, she was the largest ship in the world measuring some 240 meters, but was quickly eclipsed by her sister ship Mauretania the following year.

Lusitania had four working funnels to vent the excessive steam from the power plant. There were 192 individual furnaces powering four turbines. This enabled the ship to set the record for fastest Atlantic crossing on multiple occasions.

The waters around Ireland and Britain were declared a warzone by Germany in February of 1915, during World War 1. The Germany Embassy in America even published warnings of the dangers of Atlantic crossings in 50 American newspapers. On May 7th 1915 the Lusitania was rounding the Cork coast on her way to her home port of Liverpool. 11 miles off the coast of Cork the German U-boat SM U-20 fired one torpedo at the Lusitania, which hit the ship just under the wheelhouse. A second explosion, almost immediately after, caused the ship to list badly and the Lusitania sank in 18 minutes. Of the 1959 souls on board 761 were saved.  The wreckage lies in about 300ft of water off the coast of Kinsale, Ireland.
