Gorch Fock, is a barque or three-masted sailing ship, named in honour of the German writer Johan Kinau, who wrote under the name Gorch Fock. The ship has an interesting history.
Originally built as a training ship in 1933 by the German Navy, the Gorch Fock was launched after only 100 days. She was repurposed with the out break of World War Two as a stationary office ship, but in 1945 was scuttled by her crew after being fired upon by the Soviet Union with tanks.
In 1947 the ship was ordered to be raised by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany and taken as reparations. Gorch Fock was renamed Tovarishch (Comrade) and sailed under the flag of the USSR with her homeport in Odessa. For the next 45 years the Tovarishch sailed the world and participated in Tall Ship races, twice winning the Operation Sail Race.
With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 the ship transferred to the flag of Ukraine, where until 1993 she was deactivated due to lack of funds. In 2003 she sailed back to her home port in Sralsund where her original name Gorch Fock was restored.
This model ship is entirely handmade by skilled and experienced craftsmen, using the plank on frame construction method. No kits are used in the making of this model. The anchors, guns, decorations, and other intricate details are fashioned from metal and wood. The Sails are hand sown. High-quality wood such as rosewood, ebony, black wood and mahogany wood are used in the construction.
To protect the ship from damage during transport we remove the sails. When you receive your ship, simply insert the masts, tighten the rigging and watch your ship come to life.
