The Cutty Sark is a British clipper, her name was inspired by the fictional witch in the Robert Burnes poem Tam O’Shanter. Built in 1869, in Scotland, for the Jock Willis Shipping Line the ship was one of the fastest, and one of the last tea clippers to be built. She sailed from Britain to China for only eight voyages before turning her sails to Australia for the wool trade. The Cutty Sark held the record for the fastest time from Australia to Britain for over ten years, in a time when steam powered ships were beginning to take over those long routes.

Eventually sold on to Portuguese company Ferreira in 1895, and renamed after the company, the vessel continued on as a cargo ship transporting goods until 1922. In 1922, once sold, the Cutty Sark became a training ship out of Cornwall and then Greenhithe.

In 1954 after 85 years the Cutty Sark was decommissioned and put in dry dock in her original home port of London, where she still stands today and can be toured. You can see the detail up close and then enjoy the same detail in this model from the comfort of your own home.
